Special Congregational Meeting to address funding the removal of asbestos tile from
Kensington Wing
During the recent project to maintain and update several areas of the church building, it was confirmed that the tile and flooring mastic in the 2nd floor Kensington wing contain asbestos. Although there is no immediate concern for safety, the tile has reached the end of its useful life and needs to be addressed.
The Congregation Council reviewed several approaches to the problem including laying hard surface flooring over the tile, laying broadloom carpeting or laying modular carpeting squares. They concluded that it is in the best long term interest of the congregation to remove the asbestos flooring.
A Special Congregational Meeting has been called for 10 a.m. on Sunday, November 14 to address the issue. Grace Lutheran Church of La Grange members will be asked to vote on the transfer of an amount not to exceed $25,000 from the Grace Lutheran Church of La Grange Reserve Fund to be used for the removal of the asbestos tile flooring. A forum at 10 a.m. on November 7 will provide additional information. The transferred funds will also to be used to replace the flooring in the Sunday School supply closet and the corridor connecting the Kensington wing to the Catherine wing.”
With the removal of the asbestos flooring, the project, which has included the second floor church offices, the third floor 7th grade room which has been re-named the “Grace Café”, the third floor Confirmation Room and portions of the 2nd floor Kensington wing can be completed. The project was funded by special donations designated for these purposes.
