before retiring to their classrooms

Parents' Day Out -- Messenger 9 / 2010

Grace Lutheran Preschool is proud to announce an expanded

Parent’s Day Out (PDO) Program.

Parents enjoy a fantastic 

opportunity to drop children off at PDO. Children are under the care of the talented and nurturing 

Grace teaching staff. 

Children will learn about Jesus’ love for them through the distinctively Christian PDO curriculum.

PDO programs will run:

Mondays and Thursdays 

from 12:15 pm-3 p.m. from 

October – April  ($25)

Fridays 

from 9:00 am-1:00 pm 

with supervised lunch from 

November – January  ($35)

Preschool -- Messenger 9 / 2010

“Colors on Parade” theme of 2010-2011 Preschool Students in the Grace Lutheran Preschool will enjoy a rainbow of activities throughout the year, beginning on their first day of school for both the three- and four-year-olds: Monday, September 13. The six-week “Terrific Twos” class will begin on Friday, September 24, with two morning sessions. Parents interested in enrolling their children in either the three-year-old program or the “Terrific Twos” program are invited to call the preschool office for information.  

   The staff is looking forward to an exciting year, filled with new friends and wonderful opportunities to learn and grow together. The classrooms sparkle and look inviting to students, parents and staff. The preschool continues to add new toys and equipment, both in the classrooms and on the playground. All of these additions add enjoyment and learning opportunities for the children. Another new addition is Suzy Weisshaar to the preschool staff. The staff is thrilled to have her teaching the 4-year-olds.     

   Preschool personnel urge church members to continue saving Big G box tops and Campbell’s Labels for Education, and they thank everyone who has donated previously. Last year, the collection enabled preschool staff to acquire listening center equipment for the school.

Vacation Bible School -- Messenger 9 / 2010

Vacation Bible School was a blast-- a Baobab Blast!—with 90 children and more than 30 volunteers coming together the week of July 19 to learn how God calls people to community.

   On the first day, participants heard the story of Abraham and his trip to Caanan. They learned that Abraham trusted the Lord. On the second day, students learned about the love Joseph had for his brothers. On the third day, the Bible story focused on how Jesus’ disciples followed him. On Thursday, students learned how to care for their neighbors when they heard the story of The Good Samaritan. On Friday, participants were reminded to share, just like Philip shared his faith with the Ethiopian. Faye the zebra, Amy the monkey, Bud the elephant, Sam the meerkat and Jonathan the giraffe kept the mood light!

Library -- Messenger 9 / 2010

The Library Readers Program of Grace Lutheran Church of La Grange will begin on Sunday, October 3. It is designed to acquaint church members with the church library (including showing them all it has to offer!), without the commitment of meetings or book discussions!

   From October through May, participants are assigned one book to read each month. They will read four non-fiction titles, two biographies and two fictional books. Readers who wish to comment on titles they complete are welcome to do so, as it helps Librarian Grace Puls make selections for next time. 

   Those interested in participating are invited to complete a form located on the book truck in the Narthex or in the library. New books are picked up the first Sunday of the month and returned on the last Sunday.

Great Films mark the start of a new season -- Messenger 9 / 2010

Faith and Film will feature “To Kill a Mockingbird.” This year is the 50th anniversary of the novel, written by Harper Lee. The movie, for which Gregory Peck received an Oscar, will be shown after lunch which begins at 12:15 p.m.

Hollywood Epics series resumes on Monday, Sep 13, at 1:15 p.m. with “The Agony and the Ecstasy,” the story of the 16th century war of wills between Renaissance artist Michelangelo (Charlton Heston) and “warrior pope” Julius II (Rex Harrison).

Women of Grace / OPUS lunch -- Messenger 9 / 2010

Women of Grace are changing from their usual date to combine with OPUS and provide a luncheon and program at 12:30 on September 9. [See the OPUS article for more information about this luncheon]

   During September, two very beautiful quilts will be displayed in Fellowship Hall. They have been offered for this year’s silent auction to raise funds for Lutheran World Relief (LWR). Details for bidding can be found at the Communication Center in Fellowship Hall. Bidding will end on September 30.

Grace member Kuehn runs for Mozambique community -- Messenger 9 / 2010

Grace member Kyler Kuehn stepped up to sponsor a child in Africa through World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide. On Oct. 10, he will take many more steps as he runs the Chicago Marathon as part of Team World Vision to support a community in Mozambique. OPUS (Old People Up To Something - Messenger 9 / 2010

  OPUS and WELCA are joining forces to host a luncheon for men and women at 12:30 p.m., Thursday, September 9, in Fellowship Hall. Special guest Karla Chandler will portray Corrie ten Boom who helped many Jews escape the Nazis. The cost of the luncheon is $5. Transportation can be arranged by calling the church.

    “Rome vs. the Barbarians” an eight-week COD course will meet Mondays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. beginning September 13 and continuing through November 1.  The cost of the class is $154, or $114 for those over 65. Those interested in registering should call the college at (630) 942-2208 and register for course HUMNT-0004-002.

   A day-trip to the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in Wilmington, IL is planned for Friday, September 17, leaving the church at 9 a.m. bus and arriving back at Grace Lutheran Church by 4:30 p.m. The cost of the trip is $50. Those interested in attending should register at the OPUS kiosk in Fellowship Hall and make checks payable to Grace Lutheran Church of La Grange with “Retirees” in the memo line.    Two terrific exercise opportunities are available to church members. Tai Chi meets Thursday mornings from 8 to 9 a.m. in the lounge. “Exercise with Alice” meets on Tuesdays and Fridays at 1:15 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.

ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) -- Messenger 9 / 2010

The ROMEO Group (Retired Old Men Eating Out) will have an informal, “dutch treat” luncheon at 11:45 a.m., Thursday, September 2, at Blueberry Hill Breakfast Café, 49 S. La Grange Road, La Grange. Good fellowship, good conversation and good food is on the menu! “Retired Old Men” who would be new to the group are always welcome!
