The sermons at the worship services and forum at 10 a.m. on July 18 will provide an opportunity for all to hear and to meet our Grace-sponsored global missionary, Pastor Philip Knutson. There will also be a luncheon after the 11 a.m. service. (See box below). Everyone is invited to attend.
Pastor Philip and Lou-Marie Knutson will visit Grace Lutheran Church on July 18. They are shown here with their daughters Lindiwe and Thandiwe.
Philip Knutson serves as program assistant for the Southern African region, Global Missions, Evangelical Church in America. His areas of activity include
maintaining contact with companion churches in Southern Africa and ELCA mission personnel as well as working with companion synod, international scholarship and study programs.
He also serves as a resource person for developing Christian education resources for Sunday schools and Confirmation, as well as adult and lay leadership training in the region.
Pastor Knutson is married, and, with his wife Lou-Marie, has two grown daughters, Lindiwe and Thandiwe. Lou-Marie, who will join with Pastor Knutson in the visit to Grace, is a teacher of chemistry and physics in a local high school in Capetown. She is also a volunteer at Nazareth House, a home for orphaned and neglected children with HIV/AIDS.
The Grace VBS team has decided to sponsor the “Southern Africa Christian Education Project” which is a project Pastor Knutson is involved with. The LUCSA Christian Education Resource Project (LUCSA stands for the Lutheran Communion in Southern Africa) is the regional expression of the LWF member churches in Southern Africa. There are currently 16 member churches in 9 different countries. The “Southern Africa Christian Education Project” series of publications emphasizes that Christian education is a life-long journey for all Christians and a ministry of the whole church where everybody is a missionary and everybody is a learner and teacher. Several of the churches have expressed interest in having the books translated into local languages and are looking for support for translation, printing and the training of trainers.
Philip Knutson was born in South Africa and educated in South Africa and the United States. He received his Masters of Theology degree from LSTC in 1990. He has been a frequent contributor to the Messenger
