Are you looking back...?
The Gospel reading for Sunday, June 27, included a challenging admonition from Jesus.
To a man who wanted to follow Jesus but who wanted first to say farewell to his family, Jesus said, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62)
Have you ever tried driving to your destination while looking back? Jesus was on his way to be crucified in Jerusalem. He was committed to his mission of saving the world through his own suffering, death and resurrection. To follow Jesus required the ultimate commitment. It demanded the most from the men and women who wanted to join him. Eventually, some of them would give up on him. Some, like Peter, would deny him. However, in the end, those who truly believed in him as the Savior of the world were willing to give up their lives for the sake of the kingdom of God.
What are you willing to do in response to Jesus’ admonition? How are you looking back in your own life when Jesus wants you to look forward? What would Jesus say to us as a congregation regarding moving forward in mission? I must admit, Jesus’ words are challenging.
Peace in Christ,
