Mother/child indoor picnic, “Circles” groups, Projects Day will be Thursday, May 27, Prayer Shawl Knitters will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 13 and 27
In honor of Mother’s Day, Women of Grace is hosting a mother/child indoor picnic at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 6, in Fellowship Hall. Following a “kid friendly” meal prepared by male volunteers, Rev. Fred Berchtold will share “God’s Love Stories” using puppets.
Children twelve and under are free, while the cost for all others is $5. Tickets are available in Fellowship hall through Sunday, May 2.
“Circles” groups will meet on Thursday, May 20. Women of “Ruth” will have brunch at the home of Natalie Johnson. Women of “Miriam” will meet in the Kensington Room at 1 p.m., and women of “Martha” will have dinner out at Prasino’s Restaurant in La Grange. Circles will not meet during the summer months. Circles are small groups that meet monthly during the school year to provide education and fellowship to their members. They are open to all women in the congregation. Women generally choose a circle based on the group’s regular meeting time and location and their own schedule needs.
Projects Day will be Thursday, May 27. After sending off a record-breaking number of quilts and kits since January, Women of Grace continue producing more of quilts and kits for Lutheran World Relief. The need is never-ending. Volunteers have put together kits of assorted six-inch and nine-inch squares with directions for completing quilt tops at home. People interested in completing at-home sewing projects can pick them up from the basket outside of the chapel. It is a blessing to be able to express God’s love to those in need through this work.
Projects Day begins at 9 a.m. and wraps up between 2:30 and 3 p.m. Some volunteers stay all day, while others stay for a couple of hours depending on their availability. A midmorning coffee break is provided. Anyone staying through lunch should bring lunch from home. Women of Grace always welcomes new volunteers and emphasizes the ease of this work! “If you can pin a hem or tie a knot,” says Debbie Granger, “then we can put you or work!” And, of course, there are always projects other than quilts that need completing too.
The Prayer Shawl Knitters will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 13 and 27 in the Kensington Room. They welcome anyone interested in knitting or crocheting, even beginners. Although the main focus is on shawls, other projects are welcome. Sweaters, hats, scarves and mittens are needed by Lutheran Social Services and the Community Nurses Association. Baby sweaters are needed for Lutheran World Relief layettes. Bed socks, slippers, lap robes and afghans are always welcome in nursing homes. Needles, yarn and instructions are available.
The evening begins with prayer for those on the church prayer list and those who have received the items previously. The evening ends with prayer and a blessing on the finished items. People who can’t attend the Thursday evening meetings are welcome to bring items to Projects Day instead.
