Prayer for Peace to hear from member of Jewish Voice for Peace
On Saturday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m., a Prayer Service for Peace in the Middle East will be held at Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 909 East Main Street in Barrington.
All are welcome to attend this service of reading from the Bible, music, prayer, and sharing of timely information. As part of an ecumenical effort that began in December 2000 to more fully support faithful prayer until a just and lasting peace comes to all citizens of the Middle East, participating churches in Illinois hold similar services on the 15th of each month. To learn more, call 847-381-0243 or visit http://www.elca.org/Our-Faith-In-Action/Justice/Peace-Not-Walls.aspx.
Following the service, a special guest speaker, Lynn Pollack, will present a Jewish perspective on working for a just peace between Israelis and Palestinians, including insight as to what led her to become involved in those efforts and why she views it as the opposite of anti-semitism to speak out against the Occupation. Pollack serves on the national board of Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP - www.jewishvoiceforpeace.org) and is also on the leadership team for the local JVP chapter. A long-time member of the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation in Evanston, IL, she has served several terms on her synagogue’s board of directors and has organized many events there dealing with the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Pollack has visited the West Bank and Israel three times since 2005, twice as part of an interfaith peace delegation. She currently oversees “Ziyarat az Zeitoun”, a project of Chicago Fair Trade and American Friends Service Committee that brings fair trade Palestinian olive oil and other products to Chicago area consumers.
