Grace Lutheran Church of La Grange, Illinois is a growing congregation. In fact, sometimes it feels like our rate of growth could be faster than is manageable.
Lent is approaching and we are busy preparing for the season of reflection and fasting. As a part of my internship, I am working on a ministry project for the season of Lent. I will be preaching a series of sermons during the midweek Wednesday services on the theme of “Fasting from Stuff,” describing our ever-growing need to redirect our focus away from the stuff that takes over our lives and instead focus on Christ and faithful living. There will be a “Fasting from Stuff” Lent

FMEEC votes to support the
ordination of women
Harissa, Lebanon – (Jan. 12, 2010) Ordaining women as pastors to serve Middle Eastern churches took one step closer to becoming reality today. Delegates at the Fellowship of the Middle East Evangelical Churches (FMEEC) voted unanimously to adopt a statement in support of this change. The statement was drafted on the spot in response to a report by the fellowship’s theology committee, which found no biblical or theological reasons to oppose female ordination.
We will begin the season of Lent with Ash Wednesday services on Feb. 17.
This year, midweek lenten services, beginning on Feb. 24, will be led by Intern Pastor Dara Schuller-Hanson. (See column) You may remember the classic comedy routine of one noted stand-up comic on “Stuff.” The mid-week services will focus on our ever-growing need to redirect our focus away from the “stuff” that takes over our lives and instead focus on Christ and faithful living.
Midweek worship services will be Wednesday mornings at 11:15 a.m. and Wednesday evenings at 6:45 p.m. The evening services will be led in part by Confirmation students and 3rd- 6th grade LOGOS youth.
On Sunday, February 28, Pastor Denver Bitner will come to Grace to preach and lead an adult forum. Pastor Bitner is the CEO of LSSI. It will be a great blessing to host Pastor Bitner and continue to strengthen the partnership between Grace and LSSI. He will also present Grace with the Ministry of Hope award.
On Monday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m., a Prayer Service for Peace in the Middle East will be held at Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 909 East Main Street in Barrington.
Following the service, there will be a unique opportunity to see and hear a presentation entitled "Life in Occupied Palestine: Eyewitness Stories & Photos".
Anna Baltzer, Jewish American Columbia graduate, former Fulbright scholar, granddaughter of Holocaust refugees, and award-winning lecturer, author, and supporter of Palestinian rights will give her acclaimed presentation on the Middle East conflict with photographs and stories from documenting human rights abuses and supporting nonviolent resistance in the West Bank.
Ms. Baltzer’s talk covers checkpoints, the Wall, Israeli activism, censorship, nonviolent resistance, and other topics commonly unheard in the US. Her advocacy efforts have led to more than 100 appearances on television and lectures presented at more than 300 universities, schools, churches, mosques, and synagogues around the world. She is also the author of a book entitled Witness in Palestine: a Jewish American Woman in the Occupied Territories.
This service is held on the 15th of each month as part of an ecumenical effort in the U.S. and the world to pray daily until a just and lasting peace comes to all citizens of the Middle East. It includes reading from the Bible, music, prayers, and sharing of timely information.
