Join OPUS at 11:30 a.m., Dec. 9 to enjoy the special ham dinner and music. Everyone will receive a small gift. Instead of the usual free-will offering, attendees are asked to bring either bar soap or washcloths to be included in health kits for Lutheran World Relief or a non-perishable item for the local food pantry.
If you know someone who could use a bear hug, then you’re in luck! We once again have Friendship Bears available in the last pew of the sanctuary to be given to a friend in need. Feel free to take one to give to a friend. Please leave any bears that you would like to donate in the church office and mark them “Friendship Bear Program.”
Do you need a ride to an appointment? Remember Interfaith Community Partners (ICP) is available to help at 708-579-8929! Let’s also remember to support ICP, a coalition of area churches that provides visitation, telephone reassurance and transportation to older adults, plus a caregivers’ support group. Gale Christopher is our representative on the Advisory Council, and Natalie Johnson is on the Board. On the first Thursday of each month, Alex and Aldo’s in La Grange Park gives 10 percent of its sales to ICP, so eating there supports ICP. Grace Lutheran Church of La Grange is one of the founding members of ICP and it needs your support. (Note: transportation will not be provided from Dec. 25 to Dec. 31).
Tickets for the Friday, December 11 outing to White Fence Farm are still available. The group will leave the church at about 10:30 a.m. and return at approximately 3:30 p.m. The cost of this outing is $54 and is due with your reservation in the church office. Checks are payable to “Grace Lutheran Church.”
Feeling adventurous? We are trying a different type of outing in February. On Tuesday, February 2, 2010 we are planning a trip to the Art Institute. We plan to take the 11 a.m. train to Chicago and then a bus to the Art Institute. We will have lunch on our own. We will have a guided tour of the new addition at 1:30 p.m. The cost of the tour is $12 and is limited to the first 15 people who sign up. Watch the OPUS kiosk and the bulletin for more information.
Looking way ahead, circle your 2010 calendar for August 24 and 25 when the 15th Annual Senior Lifestyle Expo will take place at the Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace. More information will be given in 2010.
In the busy season of Christmas, don’t forget to take care of yourself. A new Tai Chi class begins on Thursday, December 10. There will be no classes on Thursday, December 24 and Thursday. December 31. The cost for 10 weeks is still only $50. Also remember to Exercise with Alice on Tuesdays and Fridays at 1:15 p.m. through December 18. We will resume in January.
Keys to aging well are: stay involved, keep physically active, maintain stimulation by reading, thinking, discussing and taking courses, enrich your life with friends and family,
eat healthy and grow spiritually.
Finally, OPUS thanks everyone who helped make the November luncheon so successful! A special “thank you” goes out to Bob Resch who presented his program on indoor plants with knowledge and humor. We were so happy to see so many people at the luncheon.
May the peace of the Christmas season be with you the entire year.
